About "Gum disease"
The types of gum diseases include:
- Gingivitis – It is the inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis makes the gums red, swollen, and bleed easily. It is usually caused due to bad oral hygiene. Some of the factors that increase the risk of gingivitis are smoking, diabetes, pregnancy, aging, stress, malnutrition, HIV infection, and some medicines.
- Periodontitis – Gingivitis if left untreated, results in periodontitis, which results in inflammation of the tissue and bone supporting the tooth. This inflammation results in tissue damage and bone loss. The different types of periodontitis are aggressive periodontitis, chronic periodontitis, periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic disease, and necrotizing periodontal disease.
Gingivitis usually settles if the underlying cause is eliminated and with scaling and root planning. Depending on the severity of periodontitis, root planning, and periodontal pocket elimination procedures are done.
