An unusual amount of fluid collection around the lungs is called as
pleural effusion which is caused by leakage from other organs, cancer,
infections, autoimmune diseases, and pulmonary embolism. The symptoms
include shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, cough, but when it is
mild, there are usually no symptoms. The diagnosis can be done using
chest X-ray, CT scan, and ultrasound. There are basically two types
which are transudative and exudative, and the treatment aims at
initially treating the underlying condition followed by symptomatic
relief and definitive management. The treatment includes
thoracentesis, pleural drain pleurodesis, pleural decortications,
which will be decided and explained by your physician.
