The branch of medical science, that uses X-rays, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance for the diagnosis of various health conditions, is known as radiodiagnosis. Radiodiagnosis uses noninvasive techniques to obtain images of the internal organs. The different imaging methods include plain radiography, fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear medicine.
- Plain radiography – This method uses X-rays to produce two-dimensional images. When the X-ray is projected towards the body part, the image is formed by the rays that pass through and the ones that get absorbed or scattered. It is used to diagnose bone fractures, lung diseases like pneumonia, bone tumors, skeletal abnormalities, etc.
- Fluoroscopy – In this method, X-rays is used to obtain continuous moving images of the internal organs. It is used to see the structure and function of the internal organs, for example, the pumping of the heart can be seen, and the process of food passing through the digestive tract can also be observed.
- CT – In this method, X-rays and computer are used to produce cross-sectional images of the scanned part. It is the test of choice to diagnose pulmonary embolism, brain hemorrhage, appendicitis, diverticulitis, etc.
- Ultrasound – This method uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the internal structures. As no radiation is used, it is considered safe during pregnancy. It is used to diagnose conditions of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and to see the development of the fetus in a woman’s womb.
- MRI – MRI uses strong magnetic fields and radio signals to produce a detailed image of the internal structures.
- Nuclear medicine – This method introduces radioactive substance inside the body, and the radiation emitted from the inside is then used to diagnose or treat a condition.
