Obesity hypoventilation syndrome or Pickwickian syndrome is a condition seen in individuals who are overweight, where the blood carbon dioxide increases (hypercapnia) and oxygen levels decrease (hypoxemia) due to repeated slow and shallow breathing. This also leads to obstructive sleep apnea, heart diseases, and leg edema. The symptoms seen are sleepiness, drowsiness, headaches, depression, and high blood pressure. Weight loss and nocturnal ventilation with positive airway pressure help relieve symptoms.
