Bile duct surgery is commonly done to treat bile duct obstruction. The bile duct can get blocked or obstructed due to liver diseases, anatomical obstruction, cancer around the bile duct, stones, scarring of the duct, and injury from surgical procedures. An obstruction can be removed by biliary bypass and stent placement. The types of cancer of the bile duct are intrahepatic, perihilar, and distal bile duct cancers. Bile duct cancers are either resected or if it cannot be removed, then liver transplantation is done.
