He completed an MBBS from the University of Kerala in 1981, a Post Graduate Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases from the University of Kerala in 1984, and a Doctorate of Medicine in Tuberculosis and Respiratory Medicine from the University of Kerala in 1986.
