Benzocaine is the most commonly used topical local anesthetic belonging to the ester group. It works by preventing the transmission of nerve impulses, thereby temporarily numbing the skin. It is used against pain and itching caused due to insect bites, sunburn, skin irritation, anal fissures, hemorrhoids, oral ulcers, earache, etc. It has been found to cause methemoglobinemia in people with respiratory illness and heart disease when taken by mouth or applied orally. Benzocaine is not recommended for use in children below two years or teething issues. They are being marketed as Orabase, Orajel, Topex, etc.
