Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome

Any injury or tumor in the brain can rarely lead to an endocrine condition called a cerebral salt wasting syndrome. In this, though the kidney is functioning correctly, there is excessive sodium excretion, leading to low blood sodium levels and dehydration. Signs and symptoms include polyuria, polydipsia, dehydration, muscle cramps, excessive salt intake, dizziness, low blood pressure, headache, etc. Again, water and salt intake can help. Mineralocorticoids are used in treatment.
