Hamman-rich syndrome or acute interstitial pneumonia is a rapidly progressing type of respiratory disease. The actual cause of this condition remains unknown and the occurrence is very rare. The progress of the disease is rapid and severe, leading to acute respiratory distress and poor oxygen levels in the blood. Lungs show massive destruction of the small air sacs called alveoli. This is a disease with a high death rate.
