Pernicious Anemia

A decrease in the number of red blood cells due to Vitamin B12 deficiency is called pernicious anemia. Intrinsic factor is essential for Vitamin B12 absorption by the intestines, which can be reduced in case of an impaired stomach lining or an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system destroys the intrinsic factor. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, chest pain, headaches, loss of weight, and pale skin. Vitamin B12 injections and a diet rich in Vitamin B12 can help treat the disease.
