Post And Core

A post and core are used to retain the artificial crown in an endodontically treated tooth where enough crown structure is not present. A post is mainly made up of metal in the shape of the root canal and inserted into the prepared canal, which retains the core restoration over it to receive the crown. Posts are classified into custom-cast posts, prefabricated, tapered, threaded, metallic, non-metallic, etc. These are indicated when more than half of the tooth structure is lost. Sometimes they are found to weaken the teeth over time due to mechanical stress.
