Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) is a type of anemia affecting the precursors of red blood cells. Having an autoimmune disorder, such as rheumatoid arthritis and hepatitis, tumors of the thymus, or infection with parvovirus B19, and certain inherited disorders can cause PRCA. The symptoms are fatigue, pale skin, and shortness of breath. PRCA is treated by having blood transfusions, taking immunosuppressive therapy and corticosteroids.
