When your gums move down from the tooth surface, exposing the surface of the tooth root, it is called receding gums. It is a type of periodontal disease, which results from untreated infection and inflammation of the gums. Some of the other conditions that can result in receding gums are tartar formation, smoking, diabetes, HIV, hormonal changes in women, and improper brushing techniques.
