Tonsillitis -Due to viral or bacteria. First 2 to 3 days treat fever and pain
Then for adult best antibiotics is Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid Or cephalosporins
Tab.Augmentin 625 mg bid for 7 days
Or
Tab.Cephalosporins 500 mg bid for 7 days

For Children
Below 3nmonths 30mg/kg/day divide 12 hours
More tha 3 months and older weight below 40 kg --25 to 45 kg / day divided 12 hours

Tonsillitis can be acute lasting for 3 to 5 days or a bit longer. Then there is recurrent tonsillitis and also chronic tonsillitis. Acute tonsillitis is most often caused by Streptococcus bacteria. Other bacteria like Staphylococci and Pneumococci etc may also can get involved. Many a times viruses which cause repiratory infections and common cold can also cause tonsillitis.
Therefore, it is not necessary to prescribe antibiotics for every case of tonsillitis. For bacterial tonsillitis betalctam group and Cephalosporins like Cefixime or Cefpodexime axitel are good choices. There is nothing like "best antibiotic" for tonsillitis. In majority of my patients my choice for bacterial tonsillitis is Cefixime and in some cased Azithromycin a macrolide. Viral cases do not need any antibiotics, just pain killers and salt water gargling is usually good enough. Thanks.
