Anal Sphincter Tonometry

Anal sphincter tonometry or manometry is a diagnostic procedure to measure the working of anal sphincters and rectum in eliminating the feces. People with difficulty passing stools, fecal incontinence, and constipation are subjected to manometry. It is also advised in Hirschsprung’s disease in children. A catheter with a balloon end is inserted into the rectum through the anal canal, after which it is inflated. It measures the pressure during contraction and relaxation of the rectum through an attached manometric gauge.
