Bitewing X-ray

Bitewing dental X-rays are used to view and diagnose interdental caries of both upper and lower teeth at a time. Since the patient bites onto the X-ray holding tabs, they acquired their name so. Usually, four bitewings are used for full mouth coverage to view interdental caries. The periapical area is not covered in bitewings. In addition, these aid in assessing the periodontal condition as bone volume and height are also visible in a bitewing. These are easy to take both for the technician and the patient compared to the intraoral periapical radiographs.
