With the help of electricity, brain stimulation therapies directly inhibit or activate the brain cells, and is therefore used in the treatment of several mental disorders. It is done by placing the electrodes directly on the brain, or placing the electrodes on the scalp, or by applying magnetic field to the head. Electroconvulsive therapy is the most reliable method; however, vagus nerve stimulation, deep brain stimulation, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, and magnetic seizure therapy are the newer methods.
