Corneocytes are dead cells present on the outer layer of the epidermis of the skin. They are replaced by desquamation. It provides mechanical strength for the epidermis of the skin to do its work. They can also absorb and store some amount of water to keep skin hydrated and maintain flexibility. Accumulation of corneocytes on the skin causes abnormal detachment of squames remaining as visible clusters on the skin.
