Muscle atrophy, also known as disuse atrophy, generally occurs by not using muscles enough. It is also known as muscle wasting. Being multidirectional, disuse atrophy can occur due to prolonged immobility. As a result, the body starts to break your muscles, decreasing the size and strength of the muscles.
