A DMSA scan uses a chemical called dimercaptosuccinic acid to study the kidneys. Prior to the scanning procedure, the individual is given an injection of the chemical which acts as a radiotracer substance. During the scanning process, one can study the presence of scarring in the kidneys, structural abnormalities, and problems with kidney function.
