During a fine needle biopsy, a small portion of body tissue or fluid is extracted from a doubtful area with a thin, hollow needle and inspected for cancer cells. The main advantages of fine needle biopsy are that it is reasonably fast, it usually doesn't need anesthesia, the skin doesn’t have to be cut, so no stitches are required and there is generally no scar. It is an outpatient procedure, usually performed at the doctor's clinic.
