High levels of creatinine indicate improper functioning of kidneys. In some cases, dehydration and certain drugs (Corticosteroids and Pyrimethamine) can also raise serum creatinine. Acute kidney failure occurs when the serum creatinine level increases more than 0.5 mg/dL from the normal level, and chronic kidney failure occurs when it is more than 2.5 mg/dL.
