Hi doctor,

I am a 48-year-old female seeking assistance in managing my newly diagnosed health concern, hypertension. Despite maintaining a generally healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management, my recent blood pressure readings consistently exceed the recommended normal range. I have not experienced noticeable symptoms like headaches or dizziness, and the diagnosis was made during a routine checkup. Given a family history of hypertension, I am keen on exploring effective treatment options. What lifestyle-based and medication-based treatments are available for managing hypertension? Which ones would be most appropriate for my specific situation? I understand the importance of consulting with a healthcare professional, and I appreciate any guidance you can provide.

Hi,

We welcome you to icliniq family.

I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation. I understand your concern.

Measures to control BP include:

1. Avoid smoking and other addictions.

2. Reduce salt intake in the diet.

3. Cut down on fatty foods, junk foods, and saturated fats.

4. Avoid stress and anxiety.

5. Engage in regular moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking for 30 minutes.

6. Ensure proper night sleep, at least 8 hours per 24 hours, including at least 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night.

7. Work on weight reduction, even if weight is within the normal range.

8. Drink plenty of water.

9. Practice deep breathing exercises and meditation.

Measure BP while you are totally relaxed, sitting for five minutes in a quiet room without talking to anyone. Empty bowel and bladder before checking BP. Avoid tea or coffee 30 minutes before checking BP. Sit on a chair with feet on the ground, back supported, hands supported on the table, cuff at the position of the heart. Check BP and repeat after 5 minutes. Then check BP in the other arm and repeat after 5 minutes. During the entire period, remain relaxed and quiet. The arm with higher BP readings is your BP. You may take at least 2 or more readings, and the average of readings is your actual BP.

If these measures are not helpful alone, then medicines are also started. For that, have renal function tests and electrolytes done.

Thank you for consulting me.
