Hi doctor,

I am a 40-year-old male. Over the past few months, I have noticed consistent elevations in my blood pressure readings during routine check-ups. I am aware that hypertension can have serious health implications, including the risk of heart disease and stroke. Therefore, I am eager to address this issue and take proactive steps to manage my blood pressure. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you for stopping by!

I am here to provide expert opinion on your medical issues.

I suggest the following measures to control your blood pressure:

1. Avoid smoking and other addictions.

2. Reduce salt intake in diet.

3. Reduce fatty foods, junk food, and saturated fats.

4. Avoid stress and anxiety.

5. Do regular moderate-intensity exercise such as brisk walking for 30 minutes.

6. Try to get proper sleep at night, at least eight hours per 24 hours including at least six hours of uninterrupted sleep at night.

7. Reduce weight, even if weight is within normal range.

8. Drink plenty of water.

9. Do deep breathing exercises and meditation.

Measure BP (blood pressure) while you are relaxed, sit for five minutes in a quiet room, without talking to anyone. Empty bowel and bladder before checking BP. Avoid tea or coffee thirty minutes before checking your BP. Sit on a chair with feet on the ground, back supported, hand supported on the table, and cuff at a position of the heart. Check BP, and repeat after five minutes again. Then check BP in the other arm and repeat after five minutes. During the entire period remain relaxed and quiet. Arm with higher BP readings is your bp. You may take at least two or more readings and the average of readings is your actual BP.

If these measures do not help, I suggest switching medicines. But before switching, have renal function tests and electrolytes done.

I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
