The withering and loss of neurons in the deepest part of the temporal lobe is known as mesial or medial temporal sclerosis (MTS). Partial epilepsy is the most common symptom of medial temporal sclerosis, in which seizures are limited to one area of the brain. Changes in behavior or emotions, muscle cramps, or convulsions are possible indications of the disease. Temporal lobectomy is the surgical treatment for MTS where the Neurosurgeons remove the portion of the brain identified as the source of the seizures in this treatment.
