Heart Valve Leakage

The heart has four valves: tricuspid valve, pulmonic valve, mitral valve, and aortic valve. These valves consist of flaps that help to have blood flow in one direction by flowing through the chambers of the heart. Any of these four valves can become leaky. During the pumping of blood, some blood can leak backward through the valve. It is referred to as valve regurgitation. The symptoms are chest pain, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, and palpitations. It is often caused due to mitral valve prolapse, endocarditis, and cardiomyopathy. It is treated with surgery.
