Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain refers to a burning or shooting sensation that results from injury or damage to the nervous system. Common causes of neuropathic pain are autoimmune diseases (e.g., sjogren's syndrome, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis), infections (e.g., HIV, shingles, epstein-barr virus, hepatitis B and C, leprosy, and diphtheria), cancers, alcoholism, neurological conditions (e.g., multiple sclerosis), medications, vitamin deficiencies, and metabolic conditions such as diabetes. People with neuropathic pain usually describe the pain as shooting, burning, pricking, or tingling, and the affected areas are hard to touch. While most cases resolve over time, other cases may require long-term treatment, including medications, physical therapy, psychological counseling, and surgery.
