Medical Conditions - Sports Hernia

Sports hernia or athletic pubalgia is a painful condition characterized by pain in the groin area due to soft tissue injury. Unlike traditional hernia, sports hernia occurs due to strain or tear of any soft tissues in the lower abdominal area, especially the tendons that attach the oblique muscles to the pubic bone are vulnerable. Common symptoms of sports hernia include extreme pain in the groin area that gets better with rest and recur on doing strenuous physical activities. Treatment of sports hernia includes rest, physiotherapy, and anti-inflammatory medicines. In certain cases, the condition may require surgical treatment.

All sports hernia Q&A

Can a sports hernia cause hip pain?

Hello, Welcome to icliniq.com. If the Cortisone shot in the hip joint did not relieve the pain, there are more chances that it is not a labral tear and possibly a sports hernia.

Please advise about the best way to detect sports hernia.

Hi, Welcome to icliniq.com. I think a 3T MRI scan will be the best modality to show a sports hernia as any small sprain or tear of the muscle can be seen best on MRI rather than USG or CT scan.
