Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal helminth parasite that gets by contact with the soil containing larvae. Strongyloidiasis is more common among migrants and travelers returning from endemic locations. Strongyloidiasis may cause cutaneous or gastrointestinal manifestations but is silent in more than 60 percent of cases and can only be detected by a high eosinophil count in the blood. Acute infection can cause ground itch, a cutaneous response caused by larvae penetrating the skin. The foot is the most usually infected site, resulting in urticaria with acute itching that can persist for several days.
