Von Willebrand factor, a blood glycoprotein that helps in hemostasis, is a carrier protein of factor VIII. The deficiency of this factor causes von Willebrand disease, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, Heyde's syndrome, and hemolytic uremic syndrome. It helps the platelets to stick together, and they adhere to the wall of the blood vessels in a wound. These platelets form temporary clots and plug holes in blood vessels to stop bleeding.
