Amniotic Fluid Index

Amniotic fluid is necessary for the development of a fetus. An amniotic fluid index is a way to measure the amniotic fluid volume in pregnant women. The normal amniotic fluid index usually lies between 6 and 24 cm. When the amniotic fluid index is less than 5 to 6 cm, the condition is known as oligohydramnios. An amniotic fluid index greater than 24 to 25 cm is referred to as polyhydramnios.
