Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is an excessive defence reaction of the body to a poisonous stressor such as illness, trauma, surgery, acute inflammation, ischemia, and malignancy. There are four basic signs of SIRS: body temperature differences (hyperthermia or hypothermia), tachycardia, tachypnea, and transitions in white blood cell count (leukocytosis or leukopenia).
