Can lifestyle modification help to control blood pressure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 59 years old. My height is 5'8", and my weight is 209 pounds. I am not a diabetic or hypertensive. But I have had anxiety attacks. My recent BP check showed 140/100 mmHg, and the two follow-up checks showed 160/100 mmHg and 140/100 mmHg. My doctor prescribed my Telma 20. I am also on Thyronorm 50 for hypothyroidism. Shall I try lifestyle modification?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is good to know that you are aware of lifestyle modification for controlling BP (blood pressure). Medicines are not the only treatment for hypertension. Following lifestyle modifications can be tried. Reduce your weight to BMI (body mass index) less than 25. Decrease salt intake to roughly around half a teaspoon in a 24-hour diet. Avoid junk foods, stress, and anxiety. Do regular exercise and have timely sleep. A blood pressure check at home reflects real blood pressure better than a doctor's office BP check. Adhere to current anti-hypertensive medicine. If the above measures fail, then a second anti-hypertensive can be added. For example, Amlodipine 10 mg daily after breakfast.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Shall I start the medication immediately or try lifestyle modification?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If your BP (blood pressure) remains persistently above 150/90 mmHg, then ask your doctor to add another medicine. But first, try lifestyle modification for at least a month.

I hope this helps.
