Hi doctor,

My mom has high blood pressure ranging from 170/90 mmHg to 180 /90 mmHg. The doctor has now prescribed tablets of 25 mg to take every morning to reduce the BP. Doctor told that there is nothing alarming after checking ECG results and a few laboratory checks that I have attached. He asked to reduce anxeity and stress. My question is how long would it take for BP to reduce to normal levels? And what steps further do I need to take to avoid serious complications? Need urgent help as I am now very much concerned. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It would take anything between two to four weeks to get her blood pressure to a safer level (140/90 mmHg or less) if she takes her medicines regularly. Other activities you need are salt restricted diet (less than 2gm/day), daily walking normal and slightly brisk pace for 30-45 minutes. Increase potassium in diet, for example bananas and potassium containing salt. Do meditation, slow and deep breathing. Avoid nicotine, stress and high intensity exercises. Drink soda or cold water along with lemon juice one glass in the morning. Thank you and take care. Regards.

Thank you doctor,

I will make sure that she takes the tablet on a regular basis and will also ask her to have the intake that you specified. Can you suggest any other tests, she needs to take as of now? Are ECG and the attached laboratory tests enough for more information?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

These tests are enough as of now. But, do ensure a regular checking of blood pressure at home. Regular visits to your local doctor every two months for the first six months. The tests she might need if BP does not come back to normal are thyroid function test, Ultrasonography of whole abdomen. Thank you and take care. Regards.
